Zohran Mamdani affirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, did not confirm this decision right away after his electoral win in November.
"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda voters supported," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his previous Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
