Why Prince Andrew Has Surrendered His Official Honors – and the Implications for the Monarchy

Through a statement issued via Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew has confirmed that he will be relinquishing his official honors, including his dukedom. Here are the details of what has been announced – and what remains unchanged.

What Did the Prince Announced?

After previously withdrawn as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, the prince has currently chosen to “go a step further” and consent not to use the “title or the honours which have been conferred upon” him.

But he also employed the announcement to make a point of rejecting – consistent with his past statements – the allegations of sexual impropriety made against him; even though after settling a substantial sum to resolve the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and firmly denied any claims of improper conduct.

There has existed persistent pressure toward the royal institution regarding the claims involving the prince – particularly after his ill-fated Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims he is acting to protect his relatives from additional harm resulting from media scrutiny.

Has the King Removed Him of His Titles?

No. And although this could be dismissed as a mere formality, it is significant in multiple ways: initially, it enables the prince to openly state to have behaved with integrity in support of the monarchy. As stated in his announcement: “I have chosen, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and the nation first.”

Second, while he has agreed not to use it, Andrew retains his ducal title, along with the honors his earldom and his barony and the prestigious Garter role as a member of the Order of the Garter. Similar to the His Royal Highness honorific, they are effectively dormant.

He continues to be royalty and eighth in succession to the throne. Theoretically, he remains a potential stand-in for the monarch – and can stand in for the sovereign if he is overseas or unwell. Although the palace has made clear that, realistically, he will not be asked to perform these duties.

Nonetheless, it is telling that the prince's announcement said the decision was made “following talks with the king”. There seems highly likely that, privately, the palace pushed for this in the hope of cutting Andrew loose.

Why Hasn’t He Been Officially Stripped of His Entire Honors?

To forcibly remove a dukedom would require legislative action, and would constitute an unprecedented step in full view of the nation – it has not occurred to a high-ranking royal in over a century – that it could cause more reputational damage for the monarchy.

Andrew is also a royal by birth. At his birth in 1960, he was automatically as the son of a monarch. This could only be altered if a letters patent was issued by the reigning monarch.

The entire procedure might ultimately being protracted, implying the goal of swiftly resolving the matter – at least for the monarchy's interests – would not necessarily be achieved.

What Are the Implications for the Prince?

Humiliation, probably more than anything else. The statement signifies an effective loss of status he has resisted for years.

He and his ex-wife, Sarah, continue to reside in Royal Lodge, despite reported efforts by the king to encourage his brother to relocate of the 30-room royal residence in the Windsor estate.

While little light has been revealed about the precise amount of funds Andrew has received as a result of his position, he remains a wealthy individual. Back in 2007, he managed to secure £15m by selling a home that had been a gift from the queen, as an instance.

What Prompted This?

The seemingly endless series of controversies related to the prince has become unacceptable for the monarch and other senior royals.

His friendship with the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is once again in the headlines following revelations that the prince stated to him “we share this situation” in an email sent three months subsequent to his assertion to have ended communication.

Additionally, there were stories about his association with a suspected Chinese spy and, recently, excerpts were published from the book released after death of Giuffre, who died by suicide in April. She claimed Andrew “thought that having sex with me was his entitlement”.

Moreover, the king is scheduled to make a historic visit to see the pontiff next week, during which he will be the initial British king after Henry the Eighth split with Rome in 1534 to worship openly with the pope and head of the Catholic church. He will not have wanted that visit to be overshadowed by more negative headlines about his brother.

What Has Been the Response?

While he said Giuffre had been “vindicated” by the move, Giuffre’s brother Sky Roberts informed the Times that the prince's style should be revoked for “genuine accountability” to be achieved.

The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the move is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “Andrew remains accused of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be divested of every honor and his navy rank and should undergo a criminal investigation. Not using silly medieval titles is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
