Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
