The Welsh cyclist Assumes New Role as Racing Director at Ineos Grenadiers
Geraint Thomas has been appointed as the new director of racing at Ineos Grenadiers, only a few weeks after retiring from competition at this year’s Tour of Britain.
"I've called this team home from the very beginning, and taking on this position is a logical progression," Thomas stated.
The move by Thomas, who was Tour de France winner in 2018, was widely expected and comes after a major management reshuffle at Ineos Grenadiers.
According to Ineos, Thomas’ newly created leadership role will see him working closely with Ineos head of sport Dave Brailsford and performance director Scott Drawer.
His responsibilities will include providing crucial input into competition planning, rider recruitment, athlete growth and race readiness.
Thomas, most recently podiumed in a Grand Tour at the 2024 Giro, finished third behind Tadej Pogacar and participated in the latest Tour de France.
He brings a blend of stage racing and one-day racing experience.
"I’m passionate about helping the next generation come through, to pass on that experience and drive the squad ahead towards our mission of winning Grand Tours again," Thomas commented.
His tactical intelligence, experience and understanding of the pack will fill a void in know-how that was apparent in recent seasons.
The British team found it hard to challenge for top spots in Grand Tours in recent years.
Former Grenadiers team principal Dave Brailsford, back at the Tour de France, conceded last July that he had "much ground to make up" following his sojourn at Manchester United.
Ineos Grenadiers have not won a Grand Tour since 2021 and the previously leading outfit has been criticised by Thomas himself and former staff.
They noted the team was lagging behind four-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar and his rivals, Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel.
"The team isn't at its desired level, nor where they need to be and the gap is not small," aerodynamics guru Dan Bigham said, following his 2024 departure announcement.
Thomas’ new position was initially discussed last year when he shared with reporters that the squad's leadership resembled a "coalition government".
He added that "things were clearer with Dave in charge. There was clarity with everything."
Brailsford’s long-standing working relationship with the Welshman has been key to his recruitment.
"Geraint understands what's required, how to handle the ups and downs of top-level competition and his willingness to now share this and guide other riders is a great asset for the team," Brailsford affirmed.
