Just prior to his name was called, a nervous worry flashed through his mind. He admitted he was thinking, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star once more."

"It's been a great night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Golf was honored in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can capitalize on that."

In this instance, however, there was no dramatic upset. The verdict was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned the top squad.

Non-Stop Adventures

Choosing not to attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was flying right back to the sunshine state.

"I've had a frantic 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Hunger for More

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no intention to slow down, notwithstanding completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a several strong seasons in me," he claimed.

"More majors, season-long rankings, international events, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep improving and have the hunger, that's the essential part."

Team Triumph

At the same time, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the team award, also applauded golf's remarkable night and his great friend's award.

"They are the memories that will live with us forever so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," he commented. "Seeing Rory win, I think he is so worthy so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Next Targets

Fleetwood hopes to at last capture his first major next year but he understands McIlroy still desires more success. "As long as you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

United Hopes

Before McIlroy left, an additional topic arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be convinced to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"As long as they quit letting in four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a smile. "There is progress. There's a hint of hope around."

Following a remarkable year, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is focusing on the positive aspects.
