A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

By the Numbers

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Latest Personal Milestone

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
