The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
