The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
