Well, perhaps an Ashes series in Australia where they remain in contention to win back the Ashes following the initial matches.
That will not be happening this time, though, after Australia's crushing 82-run win in Adelaide put the hosts 3-0 up for the fourth straight contest on their own soil.
The loyal traveling fans, the vocal contingent, have thousands of supporters making the journey for the final two Tests in Sydney and Melbourne.
There are also tour groups who will spend the Christmas period in Australia, as well as loved ones planning a dream holiday.
The Disappointed Travelers
Four fans named Alex, Sam, Rory and Katie are among those affected.
The group had their flights and tickets secured for the Boxing Day and New Year Tests "a full year in advance", dreaming of a long-awaited triumph.
From afar, they've seen Australia dismantle the tourists in just a short period from their residence in Penwortham, Lancashire.
"People in the office has been giving me grief that the series is done for the last two weeks," stated Sam Ryding.
"Our expectation had been that we would have something to play for by the time we arrived."
Lowered Expectations
Hope was abundant regarding the team's prospects of breaking a 15-year drought for a victory down under prior to the first ball.
However, the situation is now facing the prospect of extending their winless run in the country to 19 games when the next match starts in Melbourne on Thursday, 25 December.
The England team - and their followers - will be keen to prevent a dreaded 5-0 scoreline.
It was mentioned that the "entertainment" of head coach Brendon McCullum's 'Bazball' in recent times had "brought fresh energy to" the longest format for followers of the team.
Yet the fans said they had minimal hopes for the remaining matches - and all they are hoping for from the players is "a show of spirit".
"Commentators consistently points it out, but it all comes down to fortitude. 'The aggressive approach has been turned into a buzzword now that is just, like, unrealistic play," added Rory.
"During a long match, you should dig in. Wafting outside 'sixth stump' areas has never featured in the coaching manuals, and that is mainly the fault the top order."
The Remaining Matches
Prompted about he believed England will win a match in this Ashes series, came the reply: "The evidence suggests the Australians are superior currently."
"Necessarily, there must be several individuals that makes a significant contribution and produces a match-winning display."
Despite the scoreline, the fans are looking forward to the trip.
"It will be a great time anyway," added another sibling. "Our approach is that mindset."
"Of course, it's unfortunate we can't contest the series, but we have invested a significant amount as it is."
"We'll enjoy celebrating the holidays out there. Additionally, it's our first experience abroad at this time of year."
A schoolteacher, Katie is focused on enjoying the lengthy journey as part of her seasonal break.
"If all else fails, I've got golf to turn to," Katie concluded.
