Forecasters are saying a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are expected to be cold, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Readings Expected to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Released

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this meant the weather was likely to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
