Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years of Age
Global audiences mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit earned him a large and loyal fanbase.
Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
