Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
