The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
