European Union Finance Leaders Convene to Discuss Unlocking €140 Billion in Frozen Moscow's Funds for Kyiv Funding
European Union finance ministers are gathering in the EU capital this morning to tackle the bloc's economic agenda, including the pressing question of financial support to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy States Country's Existence Depends on Partners
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a latest discussion that Ukraine's existence relied on receiving additional financial aid from allies.
“We trust, with luck, we will get the necessary funding,” he stated to reporters. Otherwise, “We will have to find an alternative, it’s a question of our surviving. That’s why we need it urgently. And I count on partners.”
European Authorities Advocates €140 Billion Compensation Funding
The EU executive still hopes to convince member states – including Belgium, which continues to bloc the plan amid legal fears – to move ahead on a €140bn reparations loan based on frozen Russian assets.
Commission president Ursula von der Leyen insisted this morning that it would be “the most effective way to sustain Kyiv's military and its economy.”
Decision Postponed Till December Summit
A definitive resolution on the issue has been postponed until the EU leaders’s summit in December, with the funding needed at the start of the coming year.
Talks Coincide with Corruption Scandal in Kyiv
But these discussions come at a difficult time for Ukraine, as the president was forced to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a bribery incident in the energy sector, dismissing several officials who are accused of participating in a extensive bribery scheme.
Danish finance leader Stephanie Lose was asked about her reaction to the allegations, and insisted that there was commitment to continue supporting Ukraine.
“Naturally, The country will have to persistently focus with improvements, strengthening every sector of the nation [and] that also applies to fighting graft … but it is clear that Europe stands firmly behind Kyiv,” she stated.
