Eddie Howe Insists Sunderland Defeat Will Not Define Season.

The Newcastle United boss has vowed that the weekend's disappointing defeat in the Wear-Tyne derby will not be allowed to define his team's season.

"It’s a horrible feeling, it is extremely sore," remarked Howe, whose up-and-down team fell victim to a spectacular own goal from a header in the second period by Nick Woltemade.

The pain was intensified by the sight of the home squad taking a triumphant team photo on the pitch at the end. This act appeared to be a retort for an analogous event in January 2024, where the Magpies' squad had done the same after a 3-0 FA Cup win at the Stadium of Light.

Howe's Post-Match Assessment

"It was far from our best performance," conceded Howe. He further disclosed that England international Dan Burn was hospitalized to scan suspected rib damage.

"It is tremendously disheartening, we know our performance fell short of the required standard. But, no, I do not believe this result shapes our year. Nothing is lost today, it was a contest with minimal opportunities settled by a freak goal and we failed to manufacture the chances we desired. The effort was there but the quality wasn’t. We were let down by our creative output. We haven’t delivered. It’s difficult to take."

Sunderland's Triumph and Stance

The narrow victory elevated the newly-promoted Black Cats to seventh place in the standings, now four points and five places ahead of their north east neighbours.

While the home captain, Granit Xhaka, declared, "This team deserves much, much more respect," head coach Régis Le Bris had the satisfied air of a tactician whose gameplan succeeded.

"I feel immense pride and joy," stated Le Bris. "The win is well deserved. The lads were incredible. We were mature and composed amidst the tension. Sometimes we were even a bit too patient. Our possession play was strong but it was a question of sharper finishing in the final third. We should have scored a second yet we executed the plan and, it became straightforward to manage the conclusion at 1-0 in all honesty. We maintained solid control."

He added, "We were playing with the expectation of winning. Our aim is now to sustain this superiority. The situation is delicate yet extremely positive for the North East and for our fans."

Regarding the post-match celebration? "It was imaginative," said Le Bris, smiling.
