Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party
Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, demons, and dark forces growing in strength within the urban setting.
Note: Key plot points for the latest installment of the new season are included.
The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced
The latest chapter finished on a huge suspense moment and revealed the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to embark on their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.
The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).
Why Split the Party?
Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the characters’ stories before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.
The Nature of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.
At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
First, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.
An old friend of Thjazi—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
The antagonist then cleared his obligations and fled to a secure base in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.
Personal Motivations
Additionally, each character has a specific drive to exit Dol-Makjar:
- The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, wants vengeance.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
- Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the group reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- Thimble and The character are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by the family.
This means them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.
Upcoming Developments
According to the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Questers and Strategists parties.
Audiences can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
