A Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Curb the Influence On Resellers

Marking the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration has been formed. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop featuring exclusive items. Fans will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork that are inspired by the museum's theme. For collectors, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus at the pop-up. The store will operate from the physical location and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated tome packed with stunning illustrations that show creatures in their natural habitats. The concept like what an in-world scientist could produce after trainers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin might have created had the famous islands teemed with Pidgeys rather than birds. A key appeal lies in the book's scholarly treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of scientific study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

Why This Special Card Stand Out

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company to release promos for big events and crossover partnerships. Many of these promotional cards often feature the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest promotion apart is its distinctly bigger size. While precise specs have not been immediately shared, its distribution is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with fans able to get just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Interest

Per a company statement, some of the pop-up items will also be sold beyond the institution itself. But, a wider release will only be specific stores in the United Kingdom. Importantly, fans cannot acquire this promo via the online Pokémon Center. While reseller interest is a given, it appears they're going to have trouble stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. For those unable to attend, consider the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny of sales from the Museum shop and its web shop, including Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry to discover solutions to the global ecological crisis," the statement says.
